March Newsletter 2023 v1.1

Letter from the President of the board

Spring is here, the sun is shining more often, and everything is beginning to bloom. I love spring because it reminds me that even after the darkest winter days, there is always something brighter ahead to look forward to. This year I am looking forward to several new and things like teaching my son to drive, my middle child getting braces and starting middle school, and my youngest will soon be finishing up her elementary school journey in 5th grade. I am also looking forward to some fun family trips over the summer, and even some much needed time away with just my husband.

I am also looking forward to lots of things concerning the charter school: getting an official 501(c)3 tax designation from the IRS to be able to apply for grant funding, raising funds to have in reserve to be able to rent a building, buy classroom furniture, hire staff, and most importantly finally get approval from the Salem Keizer School board.

I have been working tirelessly on this project for over a year now, and am excited that there are some people who have recently come along beside to help in the process. This school is a work of love, and will be an enduring testament to the true nature of community. This school will become a reality because we all want it to be, because we all believe that our children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, neighbors deserve a better learning environment.

If you have not had a chance donate please consider doing so soon. Just $10.00 from all of us will raise the monies needed to hire the lawyer to work on the tax documents. Becoming a Raise Right member will make it easy to continue donating to the school while paying for the things you need everyday. Thank you all for your continued support, weather it be mentioning the school on Facebook, coming to meetings, donating items for the upcoming raffle, commenting on posts, anything, and everything you do to forward the mission of the school helps. Thank you!

Karen O'Connell

Fundraising Goals and Needs

Legal Advice

Due to the length and complexity of the 501(c)3 application it has been decided to hire a lawyer who specializes in this type of work. One is available through the Small Business Law Clinic at Lewis and Clark College. He has experience working with nonprofit organizations, and filling out this specific paperwork. We are about half way to raising what is needed to have his expert council in this matter.

Spring Raffle

We are still in need of items for the upcoming raffle happening on May 15, 2023. All donated items will be grouped together into themed baskets. Raffle tickets will go on sale Friday, April 28th and be available until Sunday, May 14th. Tickets will be $5.00 a piece and all proceeds will go into the general school fund. Pictures of the baskets will be posted closer to when tickets go on sale.

Where We are in the Application Process

The application is finished, the budget is being looked over by experts, and there is a growing list of dedicated and talented professionals who have expressed interest in working for the school.

We are getting so close! Just 5 more months until the application will be turned back into the school district for review.
